A Professional Organizer’s Guide to Designing a Senior Living Suite That Balances Safety, Function, and Comfort
Moving into an Edmonton senior living community is a big milestone. It represents a fresh start, but it also comes with significant downsizing and planning work. When our team at Sort & Simple helps set up a new senior suite, we always remind families that the goal isn't to fit all your things into a smaller square footage. It’s about creating a safe, functional environment with your favourite and most used belongings.
Whether you are a senior taking this step yourself or a child helping your parents transition, a little thoughtful planning goes a long way. Our professional organizing team recommends focusing on these three core areas to set up your new space with total confidence.

1. Floor Planning
Before moving day arrives, measure your new suite (you can even ask for a blueprint!). Choosing the right furniture layout prevents overcrowding and ensures the space is functional from day one.
Map and right-size your furniture: Traditional furniture is often too bulky for senior suites. Swap that oversized, heavy family sofa for a sleek loveseat, or replace your full-sized armchair with a compact, easy-to-operate recliner.
Break up matching sets: It is entirely okay to bring only four place settings of your favorite dishes, or a curated portion of a beloved collection. If only one piece of your living room set will fit, take your favourite piece and pass the others along.
Prioritize double-duty storage: To maximize a smaller footprint, choose furniture that does double duty. Consider a bed with built-in drawers and a media console with closed cabinets to hide clutter. Even a foot stool with a removable top will add helpful storage.

2. Safety First
When it comes time to move to senior living, prioritizing safety is key. Our team always unpacks with mobility in mind to reduce frustration and prevent accidents as your loved one adjusts to a new routine.
Maintain clear pathways: Arrange furniture to leave wide, clear paths. You want enough clearance for a walker or a wheelchair to maneuver easily without catching on sharp corners or tight bottlenecks.
Skip area rugs: Loose rugs and runners are one of the top tripping hazards for seniors. It’s best to skip them, or ensure non-slip, low-profile mats.
Within arm's reach: Place the items used every single day at waist-to-shoulder level, especially in the kitchenette. Avoid making seniors use risky step stools or bend down deep into low, dark cabinets.
Label (even if you feel silly): Moving is disorienting, and learning a new kitchen takes time. Don't be shy about putting labels on the outside of cabinets (e.g., "Mugs," "Plates," "Glassware") to reduce daily friction during the first few weeks.
Boost the lighting: As we age, our eyes naturally require more light to navigate spaces safely. Add lamps throughout the suite to reduce eye strain and brighten up dark corners, plus motion sensor night lights to prevent falls.

3. Create Familiarity
Adding our personality, history and memories to a space are what make it truly feel like home. Take the time to make the space your own.
Decorate, display, and enjoy: Don't leave the good stuff packed away in boxes! Bring your absolute favorite artwork, the most cherished family photos, and treasured heirlooms—and display them proudly where they can be seen and enjoyed every day.
Replicate familiar setups: If your loved one always had a specific clock on their nightstand or a favorite photo hanging right above the TV, try to recreate those visual anchors in the new suite to provide an immediate sense of home.

You Don’t Have to Do it Alone
Moving to a senior living suite comes with many benefits, but getting across the finish line can be physically and emotionally exhausting. At Sort & Simple, we specialize in senior move management right here in Edmonton.
We don't just pack boxes. We map floor plans, unpack the kitchen down to the last fork, display your mementos, and ensure your new home is safe, functional and homey from the very first night.
Let’s design a space where your loved one can thrive.
