Success Story: Senior Living Transition for Grandma Vi

A Stress-Free Move for my Grandma in Edmonton
This success story is my most special yet! Recently, I had the honour of helping my very own Grandma Vi downsize and transition into a beautiful new senior living residence in South Edmonton. Grandma Vi (or VV as I call her) has always been one of my greatest supporters, and when it came time for her big move, she trusted the Sort & Simple team implicitly to handle every part of her downsize.
Once Grandma Vi made the choice to downsize, things progressed much faster than expected. A suite became available, giving us a tight one-month timeline to get her moved in and have her townhome cleared and ready for the market.
While she had a reasonable amount of belongings (less than average, I’d say!), it was still too much for her new one bedroom layout. Trying to figure out what would fit—and what to do with the rest—was understandably overwhelming for her.
As her Senior Move Manager, my main goal was to ensure she didn't feel an ounce of stress. In fact, I had to remind her a couple times leading up to the big day: "VV, you don't need to lift a finger! It’s all being taken care of."
The Strategy: A Streamlined Move Plan
Because a successful move is won in the preparation phase, we broke the transition down into simple steps, so that Grandma Vi could hand over the logistics and live in her home normally right up to move day.
The 3-Week Lead-Up (Decluttering): In the weeks preceding the move, she and I spent time decluttering her belongings and pre-packing non-essential items, carefully measuring her new floor plan to ensure only her favorite, most functional pieces made the cut.
Wednesday (Pack Day): Salina and I swept through her townhome, safely boxing up the remainder of Grandma Vi’s “keep items”. With the packing complete, Grandma Vi headed off to stay the night at my parents' house. Thus, she had all her essentials with her and would miss all the urgency of an early morning move.
Thursday (Move & Unpack Day): Bright and early, I met Eager Beaver Movers at her townhome. Their incredible crew wrapped furniture and packed the truck with expert efficiency. Because of our thorough prep work, the truck was entirely loaded AND unloaded at her new senior residence by 12:30 PM!
With the afternoon ahead of us, Sondi, my mom, and I got to work on a great part of our job: the unpack. We completely set up her new one-bedroom suite from top to bottom. We unpacked and removed every box, hung her clothes in the closet, placed her favorite photos, and made her bed.
When Grandma Vi walked through her new front door at 4:30 PM, there was no moving chaos to greet her. Instead, she walked into a fully finished, cozy home, instantly surrounded by the comfort of her most familiar things.

The Final Wrap: Clear-Out & Community Impact
Once Grandma Vi was peacefully settled, our team returned to the townhome to clear it out for an empty listing. We organized a donation pickup with More Than a Fad Thrift Store in support of Adeara Recovery Centre.
Knowing her items would directly help local women in addiction recovery rebuild their lives made letting go of her items easier, and made Grandma Vi so happy.
After the donations were cleared, Start & Sparkle came in for a thorough professional cleaning, leaving the townhome absolutely pristine. We then handed the keys over to her fabulous realtor, Suzanne Dudey, and the home was officially ready to hit the market!
